Artist Comments

Chrysalis is about emergence and transformation. Mike Roig made the small cast iron figure at an iron-pour in Tucumcari, NM. Her wings are actually fabricated from steel and then were held in the sand mold as the molten iron flowed in to fuse them into the figure. She sat on a shelf in his studio for several years until he had the idea of giving her her current dramatic setting.

About the Artist

Mike Roig has been fabricating sculpture for over thirty-five years, and in his Carrboro, NC studio for more than twenty. A graduate of the fine arts program at the University of Maryland, he has become best known for his kinetic sculpture, Chrysalis being but one example. His work can be found in public and private collections nation-wide with the highest concentration being here in the mid-Atlantic region.
