6th Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition
Mar 6, 2009 - Jun 6, 2009
The 6th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition (AMPC) is a program of Appalachian’s Outdoor Programs in partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. The AMPC has grown to become a prominent regional competition attracting the work of amateur and professional photographers from up and down the East Coast allowing them the opportunity to celebrate the unique people, places, and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians.
Categories for photographic submissions include Adventure, Blue Ridge Parkway Vista and Share the Journey, Culture, Environment, Flora/Fauna and Landscape. A number of cash awards and Mast General Store Prize Packages will be presented in addition to the popular Footsloggers People’s Choice Award. The AMPC is sponsored by Virtual Blue Ridge, the premier Blue Ridge Parkway resource with generous support from Bistro Roca and Antlers Bar of Blowing Rock, NC and Peabody’s Beer and Wine Merchants of Boone, NC.
Judges for the 6th Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition include John Scarlata, Coordinator of the Technical Photography program at Appalachian State University; Marie Freeman, Photojournalist and Photographer for Appalachian State University; and award winning photographer Richard Rapfogel. They will return for a final round of judging after the exhibition opens to determine category winners and Best in Show. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.
AMPC does more than highlight the great talent of the amateur and professional photographers whose images are selected. A large portion of the proceeds subsidize the cost of Appalachian students participating in Outdoor Programs Student Outdoor Learning Expeditions (SOLE). SOLE trips are educational journeys of discovery that take Appalachian students around the world. Previous SOLE trips have taken students to New Zealand, Alaska, Fiji and Wales and award academic credit to participating students.
The AMPC is a partnership between Appalachian State University’s Outdoor Programs, the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation. AMPC is made possible through the sponsorship of Virtual Blue Ridge, the premier online resource for the Blue Ridge Parkway and the generous support of Bistro Roca, Inventive American Cuisine; Footsloggers Outdoor and Travel Outfitters; Mast General Stores; and Peabody’s Wine and Beer Merchants.
