El Dia de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead: A Community Celebration

Oct 6, 2006 - Nov 18, 2006

The Turchin Center hosts the return of the popular “Dia De Los Muertos Day of the Dead.” This holiday, in memory of deceased ancestors, is celebrated most notably in Mexico; however it is celebrated in the US, the Philippines, and to a lesser extent in other Latin American countries. In Mexico, despite what might seem to be a macabre subject matter, the holiday is celebrated with great joy. Unlike Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls Day, which occur at the same time, Day of the Dead features a much lighter mood, emphasizing the celebration and honoring of the deceased. Faculty member Rachel Shinnar leads a group of volunteers and students in exploring this vibrant cultural tradition.
