North Carolina Arts Council

2023 Regional Artists Support Grant Recipients

Each year the North Carolina Arts Council awards project grants to artists across the state, which are administered by regional arts councils. Grants awarded in Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes counties are managed by the Watauga County Arts Council in Boone. Artist Support Grants encourage professional artists in any discipline (at any stage of their careers) to further their artistic and professional development through the creation of new work, purchasing equipment and materials, attending professional development workshops, traveling for conferences or exhibitions, and producing promotional material. In collaboration with the Watauga Arts Council, the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is proud to showcase the regional artists who received a 2022-23 Artist Support Grant: Andrew Bailey Arend, Nicholas Cline, Travis Donovan, Benjamin Erlandson, Frankie Flood, William Graham, Nik Hermanovski, Patricia Leonard, Scott Ludwig, Carol Patton, Daniel Rich, Elizabeth Wilson, and Ian Wilson.

Signe Stuart, Double Kore, 2019

Signe Stuart ARTtalk @ 5:30 PM / Lecture Hall

Signe Stuart’s beautiful exhibition, Flux, will close June 3, 2023.

Join the artist for a virtual presentation in the Turchin Center lecture hall at 5:30 as part of the June 2, 2023 First Friday events.

Beginning in the early 1960s, Signe Stuart’s professional career has now spanned more than sixty-five years.  Her approach to art making has always relied on experimentation and rule breaking. Using the materials and form of painting, she breaks away from the standard rectangle and concepts of framing. Her visual vocabulary emphasizes line: single lines emerging from material; low relief line patterns forming flux fields and networks of relationships.
