Artist Comments

The character and structure of cactus plants have been the subject of my work for the last few years. Prickly but soft underneath, filled with life-giving water and found in harsh environments, cacti symbolize endurance, bravery, protection and maternal love. We admire their monumentality, healing powers and the way they are masters of survival. It is that anthropomorphic link to humans that I have been exploring in this work. Succulent II, like the other works in the series, was inspired by a particular cactus – this one with a rhythmical pattern of spiraling bumps. The work symbolizes to me the nurturing, maternal forces in nature.

About the Artist

After a professional career as an industrial designer with IBM, Susan turned her creative energies to sculpting. It was a last-minute decision to accompany an artist friend to Carrara, Italy to study marble carving in 2005 that set her on a new path. She fell in love with marble’s beauty and mailability and is fascinated by the earth history that it reveals. Susan’s work has been widely shown and awarded in numerous public art exhibitions, and resides in several private collections. Her work is widely recognized by its sensuous, organic forms in brilliant white marble. She lives and works in Chapel Hill, NC.
