Artist Comments

I am honored to be a part of the 30th Anniversary Rosen Competition. I strongly believe in, and support sponsored art that provides both attractions for visitors and opportunities for artists.

I have been a filmmaker, artist and sculptor and have gravitated to public art about twelve years ago. At first, my sculpture was small, as I did not have the tools to make it larger. Then I took an adult-education arc-welding course through a local community college. Since then, I have salvaged and repaired old welding equipment, purchased new gear and now put the money from the sale of my work or honoraria I receive back into the renewal of my studio and equipment.

With a cinematic eye and a welder’s arc, I bring light, motion and mass to my work. I contrast weathered and polished, light and dark, mass and space. I often work in four dimensions, allowing time to show the kinetic aspects of a piece. The processes of welding have allowed my dreams to soar. I enjoy the fabrication as much as the design, and usually refine the concept during construction. In the end, I feel there is some of “Vulcan’s* power” in my work.

* Vulcan – the Roman god of fire and metalworking (not to be confused with any Startrek characters or species).

Project Narrative

Windsong II

This new work is the latest iteration from my kinetic “Windsail” series. The top 5’ foot sail section rotates in the wind much like a weathervane. This sail rests atop a polished black granite cube and a triangular base.

The work is fabricated of stainless steel and granite and is mounted directly to a concrete pad. The actual installation will be carried out in consultation with the Rosen curatorial and facilities staff.
