Whether you’re a regular visual journaler, just getting started, or have a project of your own to work on–  this open studio provides an opportunity to draw, doodle, cut, collage, paint, paste, and write reflectively in a relaxed and inspiring group setting. There are no rules in a visual journal–it’s a playful and deeply personal practice that can relieve stress and heighten awareness. Let this group setting motivate you to keep up with your visual journaling practice, share ideas, techniques, and creativity with fellow travelers on the visual journaling journey. Appalachian State University student Katherine Rains will guide participants with an introduction, provocation, or technique demonstration. All supplies are provided for those preregistered one week in advance of each workshop. Artists of all skill levels are welcome.

About the instructor  Katherine Rains is a senior at Appalachian State University, and will receive a BFA in Art Education K-12 in the fall of 2021. Alongside learning about being an effective teacher, she pursues her own art interests in acrylic painting and mixed media work. She began working for the Turchin Center fall 2020, teaching Blazing Easels art lessons online.  She feels passionate about the importance of children learning and playing through art. Blazing Easels has made her feel more connected to Boone’s art community, and she has loved working with her peers and teaching children meaningful art lessons based on artist’s works in the Turchin gallery. She will lead Turchin’s open studio nights this semester and hopes to cultivate a sense of community and joy in an online space.
